El Clasico 2026 is here, and the timing could not be spicier. Barcelona host Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday night, and less than 24 hours later the Ballon d’Or 2026 winner is crowned in London.
For Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe, this is not just a Clasico. It is the final audition for the biggest individual prize in football.
Full-Time Result: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid
Full time at Camp Nou, and Real Madrid have ended Barcelona’s perfect start to the season. Kylian Mbappe scored twice, in the 41st and 87th minutes, to hand Barcelona their first La Liga defeat of the campaign.
Raphinha pulled one back for Barcelona in the 61st minute, but Mbappe’s late winner, set up by Eduardo Camavinga, settled El Clasico 2026.
What it does to the title race: Barcelona still lead La Liga with 27 points from 10 games, but Real Madrid are now just three points behind on 24, so the gap is three, not nine.
Barcelona: Nine Wins From Nine
Barcelona are a machine right now. Nine wins from nine in La Liga, 39 goals scored, and only the second team in history to open a season with nine straight wins.
Saturday’s 5-2 demolition of Real Betis summed them up. Lamine Yamal scored a beauty, Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo all joined in, and the only drama was Betis finishing with ten men.
Hansi Flick has them playing fearless football. Raphinha leads the La Liga scoring charts with 12 goals, Mbappe has nine and Yamal has eight, and the depth in this squad is scary. Raphinha started in Paris, his first start since September 19, and he looked ready to carry that form into Sunday.
Then came the first real setback of the season. Barcelona lost 4-2 at PSG on Tuesday night, their first defeat of the campaign and the end of an 11-game winning run. Doue struck in the 38th minute, and Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz added the others, with Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal replying for the visitors. Flick blamed fatigue after a brutal week. The bad news did not stop there. Dani Olmo limped off in the first half with a left adductor injury and is expected to miss the Clasico, around a month on the sidelines. Eric Garcia is out for three to four weeks with a right thigh problem, Andreas Christensen is also sidelined with a muscle issue, and Jules Kounde is a doubt with a left ankle sprain, though Flick expects him back soon. On the plus side, Gerard Martin returned from his ankle problem and started in Paris. And the Camp Nou factor is real: Barcelona have won 23 straight La Liga home matches.

Real Madrid: Mourinho’s First Clasico Back
Jose Mourinho is back in the Clasico dugout, and his first one back could not be bigger. Madrid thrashed Sevilla 4-1 on Sunday to move within six points of Barcelona.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice, Arda Guler and Yan Diomande got the others, and Jude Bellingham set one up with a stunning assist. Madrid looked ruthless. But the big story is who is missing.
Wednesday was a statement. Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Bernabeu, their third straight Champions League win and their fourth in all competitions. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, Arda Guler doubled it after half time, and late strikes from Mbappe and Yan Diomande settled it after Gomis pulled one back for the visitors. The selection told its own story too. Vinicius started because his four-match ban only covers La Liga, so he still misses the Clasico, and he made way for Diomande in the 70th minute. Valverde played at right-back again, and he looks set to keep that job on Sunday.
Mourinho, meanwhile, is doing what Mourinho does. He said confidence does not exist in Clasicos, then complained that Madrid get 24 hours less rest than Barcelona. The 140-million-euro record signing Diomande may start on Sunday because he offers more defensively, and with Barca on 27 points from nine straight wins and Madrid third on 21, the gap is either three or nine come full time. Mbappe, with four goals in his last three games, will fancy his chances either way.
No Vinicius: The Suspension That Changes Everything
Vinicius Junior will NOT play in El Clasico 2026. The Brazilian got a four-match ban: two games for pulling an opponent’s hair against Villarreal, plus two more for his angry protest at the referee afterwards.
That is confirmed by the Spanish federation, and it covers Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia. He can still play in the Champions League, as he did against Leipzig on Wednesday, but La Liga is off limits for a month.
For Madrid, this is a massive blow. For Barcelona’s right side, it is a massive relief.
Yamal vs Mbappe: The Ballon d’Or Audition
Here is the storyline that sells El Clasico 2026. The Ballon d’Or 2026 ceremony is on Monday night in London, one day after this match.
Yamal and Mbappe are both frontrunners for the award. Whoever owns Sunday night walks into Monday’s ceremony with all the momentum.
Mbappe has been Madrid’s main man all season. Yamal just tore Betis apart. This is box office.

Head-to-Head: Nobody Leads After 264 Meetings

| Competition | Meetings | Real Madrid wins | Barcelona wins | Draws |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Liga | 192 | 80 | 77 | 35 |
| Copa del Rey | 38 | 13 | 17 | 8 |

Last season Barcelona had the edge when it mattered most, beating Madrid 2-0 at Camp Nou in May to seal the league title. But Madrid won the first Clasico of last season 2-1 at the Bernabeu.
Sunday’s winner takes the all-time lead. That alone is worth the ticket.
Expected Lineups
Barcelona: Joan Garcia; Xavi Espart, Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Joao Cancelo; Rodri, Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Anthony Gordon; Raphinha.
Real Madrid: Andriy Lunin; Federico Valverde, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella; Aurelien Tchouameni, Bernardo Silva; Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham, Yan Diomande; Kylian Mbappe.
Official lineups confirmed: Vinicius is suspended and Courtois misses out through illness, so Lunin starts in goal. Kounde, Eric Garcia, Olmo and Christensen are all out injured for Barcelona.
Prediction
Barcelona’s attack is the best in Europe right now, and Madrid are without their most chaotic weapon. But Mourinho in a Clasico, with a point to prove, is never simple.
Heart says goals. Head says Barcelona’s depth wins it late.
Prediction for El Clasico 2026: Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid.
